Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about online therapy
Starting therapy is a big step. Here are answers to some common questions I hear from prospective clients. If you have other questions, feel free to reach out. I'm happy to help.

What is a consultation session?
A consultation session is a brief opportunity for us to determine whether we're a good fit to work together. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, what you're hoping to achieve, and any questions you have about my approach, fees, scheduling, or the therapy process. The focus is on helping you decide whether moving forward feels right for you.
What happens in the first session?
The first full therapy session and serves as the foundation for our work together. During this session, we’ll take a more in-depth look at what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, and the goals you’d like to work toward. We’ll also explore relevant background information, such as mental health history, previous therapy experiences, family and relationship dynamics, medical history (as it relates to mental health), and current life stressors. This helps me get a comprehensive understanding of your situation so we can begin shaping a treatment plan that fits your needs. While the intake is more structured than ongoing sessions, it is still collaborative and conversational. You are not expected to share everything at once, and we will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
How does online therapy work?
Online therapy (telehealth) allows you to attend therapy sessions virtually from a private and secure location of your choosing, such as your home or office. Sessions are typically conducted through a HIPAA-compliant video platform, which ensures your privacy and confidentiality are protected. At your scheduled appointment time, you simply log into the secure link provided and join the session. The experience is very similar to in-person therapy. You and I will talk in real time, explore what’s bringing you to therapy, and work collaboratively on your goals. Many clients find online therapy to be convenient and accessible, as it removes travel time and makes it easier to fit sessions into a busy schedule. To get the most out of therapy, it’s important to be in a private, quiet space where you feel comfortable speaking openly and without interruption.
How long are sessions and how often will we meet?
Sessions are typically 55 minutes in length. Most clients begin by meeting once per week, as weekly sessions tend to provide the consistency needed to build momentum and make meaningful progress. Depending on your goals, schedule, and level of support needed, we may also decide to meet biweekly over time. The frequency of sessions is flexible and collaborative. We’ll regularly check in on what feels most helpful and adjust as your needs change.
